Nigerian Army Releases Traditional Ruler of Ewu Kingdom, Clement Ikolo

After approximately one month in custody, the Nigerian Army released Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of the Ewu Kingdom. Ikolo was handed over to Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central at the National Assembly, who will act as his surety.

Major General Clement Nwachukwu, the Army’s spokesperson, confirmed the release, stating that Ikolo was handed over to Senator Dafinone based on the absence of evidence establishing his culpability. However, he has not been officially cleared of any charges.

Ikolo had surrendered himself to the police following his declaration as wanted by the military in connection with the killing of 17 army personnel in Okuama, Delta State, on March 14. He had been in military custody for about a month since the police handed him over to the military after his surrender.

The incident occurred when Nigerian soldiers on a peace mission responded to a distress call during a communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities. Sixteen soldiers, including the Commanding Officer of the reinforcement team, two Majors, one Captain, and 12 soldiers, were ambushed and killed during the operation.

In response to the killings, the military declared eight individuals, including Ikolo, wanted in connection with the murder of the soldiers.

The release of Ikolo signifies a significant development in the ongoing investigation, highlighting the complexity of the situation and the challenges faced by security forces in addressing communal conflicts and violence in the region.
