Soldiers Decry Commanding Officer's Negligence

Soldiers of the Nigerian Army stationed at the 81 Division Task Force Battalion in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State have voiced grave concerns over the actions of their Commanding Officer, Lt Col SJ Ajiya, which they allege have resulted in the deaths of several of their comrades.

Speaking anonymously to SaharaReporters, the soldiers revealed a disturbing pattern of negligence and disregard for their safety since Ajiya assumed command.

They recounted instances where soldiers lost their lives due to his refusal to utilize vital Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles during patrols, citing an incident where seven soldiers were killed in a single day as a consequence.

Urgent calls for accountability and reform are made amid mounting discontent.

The soldiers further detailed Ajiya’s alleged unprofessional behaviour, including sending troops on futile errands to hazardous locations and neglecting to provide adequate vehicle maintenance, resulting in fatal accidents. They lamented the loss of Warrant Officer Charles Nwogu and Private Ugwu Daniel, as well as numerous others who sustained severe injuries due to vehicle failures.

Expressing their frustration, the soldiers condemned Ajiya’s disregard for their well-being and criticized his disrespectful demeanour towards both enlisted personnel and officers. They urgently appealed for intervention to address the dire situation.

Efforts to obtain a response from Nigerian Army authorities were unsuccessful at the time of reporting, as Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army spokesman, could not be reached for comment. The soldiers’ pleas underscore the urgent need for accountability and reform within the military chain of command to ensure the safety and welfare of personnel in conflict zones.
