Upholding Judicial Integrity: A Call to Action from the American Bar Association

In recent years, threats against judges have surged, endangering judicial independence and the rule of law. With 457 serious threats targeting federal judges in 2023 alone, the American Bar Association (ABA) urges lawyers to defend the integrity of our courts and combat false accusations.

As guardians of the legal profession, lawyers are bound by ethical rules to uphold the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, which prohibit false statements about judges’ qualifications or integrity. In response to unjust criticism, lawyers are called upon to defend judges and courts, preserving the fair and independent administration of justice.

The ABA’s Standing Committee on the American Judicial System issued a clarion call in 2018, urging lawyers to swiftly correct public misinformation and uphold the judiciary’s esteemed reputation. Bar associations play a crucial role in safeguarding judicial integrity, ensuring that judges are respected leaders in our legal system.

It is imperative for all members of the legal community to rededicate themselves to protecting our nation’s impartial system of justice. Lawyers must educate the public on the role of independent judges in a democratic society and advocate for their safety and integrity.

In these extraordinary times, lawyers have a unique duty to defend the rule of law and American democracy. Lawyers can uphold the foundational principles of justice by standing up for judges, engaging in civic education, and promoting legal recourse for dissatisfied individuals.

As the largest voluntary association of lawyers globally, the ABA continues to champion the administration of justice, support legal professionals, and foster public understanding of the significance of the rule of law.

Protecting Our Judiciary: Upholding Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law

Lawyers are facing an alarming increase in threats against judges, with 457 serious threats reported targeting federal judges in 2023 alone.

Often fueled by false statements and partisan motives, these attacks pose a significant threat to judicial independence and the rule of law. In response, legal professionals are urged to uphold ethical standards, defend the judiciary against unjust criticism, and engage in public education initiatives to promote understanding of the legal system’s role in democracy.

Lawyers can play a crucial role in safeguarding the judiciary’s integrity and ensuring public trust in the legal system by advocating for legislative reforms, engaging with communities, and leveraging media platforms to counter misinformation.

The American Bar Association and other legal organizations have called for a concerted effort to address these challenges, emphasizing the importance of legal professionals standing up for judges and their staff.

Through collaborative efforts to educate the public, advocate for policy changes, and uphold professional ethics, lawyers can help protect the judiciary from unwarranted attacks and preserve the foundation of democracy. As guardians of the rule of law, lawyers are uniquely responsible for defending the judiciary and promoting public awareness of its vital role in upholding justice and preserving democratic principles.
