Femi Falana Challenges Coroner's Ruling on Sylvester Oromoni's Death.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has raised objections to the ruling of Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, the Coroner who investigated the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State. In the ruling delivered on Monday, the Coroner absolved Dowen College of blame and attributed the deceased’s death to the negligence of the family doctor.

Falana expressed concerns over the coroner’s dismissal of crucial evidence, particularly regarding the “black substance” found in Sylvester’s stomach, which was not subjected to toxicological examination despite allegations of forced ingestion of a poisonous substance.

A human rights lawyer criticizes the Coroner’s decision, pointing out overlooked evidence and lapses in the investigation.

The Coroner’s ruling, delivered on April 15, exonerated Dowen College and blamed Sylvester’s death on parental and medical negligence. The decision prompted criticism from Falana, who questioned the oversight of evidence and lapses in the investigation process.

He highlighted discrepancies, including the reversal of recommendations by the Acting Director of Public Prosecution of Lagos State regarding potential prosecution for criminal negligence over student bullying. Falana noted that the coroner seemingly overlooked compelling evidence of bullying and torture experienced by Sylvester and other students at Dowen College.

Furthermore, Falana criticized the coroner’s conclusion that Sylvester’s death resulted from natural causes, despite testimonies indicating severe maltreatment and sepsis likely caused by excessive leg massage. He also raised concerns about failing to refer the family doctor to appropriate medical authorities for sanctions.

Falana’s remarks underscore the need for thorough and impartial investigations into Sylvester’s death, ensuring accountability and justice for the deceased and his family.
