A lawyer lives for the direction of his people and the advancement of the cause of his country’.
Chief Christopher Alexander Sapara Williams (First indigenous Nigerian Lawyer 1855-1915)
Dear Colleagues,
It has now been over a year since you gave me the privilege of leading a team of your elected officers to run the affairs of our Association for two years. I can never overstate my gratitude for the singular honour done to me.
You may recall that during my campaign, I focused on seven strategic areas: Administration of Justice Sector Reform, Institutional Development, Professional Development, International Partnerships, Public Interest Law Advocacy, Creating Employment Opportunities for Members, and Welfare of Members.
This activity report furthers our commitment to administer the affairs of our association in an open and accountable way. This will be in keeping with our resolve to keep you informed every step of the way as we head towards the final stretch of our two-year tenure.
At the same time, we hope this report will educate the public about issues in the welfare scheme of the Nigerian Bar Association and facilitate essential conversations that will lead to sustainable reforms that our nation desperately needs.
We are enormously grateful for your support over the last year. Everything we do is possible because of your commitment to the issues we address. We have never been more determined than we are today to continue rediscovering, repositioning and reforming our association to enable us to respond appropriately to the needs of Lawyers.
We are happy to provide this report to you:
The NBA – Flood Disaster Relief Committee is an Adhoc committee of the NBA inaugurated on 17th November 2022, whose terms of reference were to raise funds to alleviate the sufferings of members severely affected by the ravaging flood in 2022. The NBA-FDRC, ably led by Prof Yusuf Ali, SAN, swung into action to solicit funds from members of the Association and public-spirited individuals.
The committee raised an impressive sum through a concerted effort to rally both NBA members and the general public. This fund, meticulously managed through a dedicated account, serves as a beacon of hope for those grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
520 affected members were sent to the flood disaster committee through their branches. After verification, 267 beneficiaries were confirmed eligible for support, representing a crucial step towards delivering aid where it’s needed most. The branches include:
Anaocha Branch
Calabar Branch
Dutse Branch
Lokoja Branch
Makurdi Branch
Yenagoa Branch
Sagbama Branch
Aligned with the directive of the NBA President, each verified beneficiary has been credited the relief sum. The NBA-FDRC reaffirms its commitment towards standing in solidarity with its members during adversity.
Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau OON SAN
