In a significant stride towards the advancement of Nigeria’s legal system, the Federal Ministry of Justice has collaborated with the Centre for Socio-legal Studies (CSLS) to host a National Stakeholders’ Forum, focusing on the comprehensive review of the implementation of The Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) of 2015, as well as the Administration of Criminal Justice Laws of various states. Notably, this event is paramount in the ongoing discourse regarding enhancing the country’s criminal justice system.

Transforming Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System: Insights from the NBA President’s Address at the LCCLCJ Event.

During the forum, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, delivered a goodwill message, emphasizing the NBA’s unwavering support and pivotal role as Africa’s largest bar association. He underscored the recent success of the 2023 Annual General Conference, with the theme “Eight Years of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015: What Has Changed?” took centre stage.

The conference saw Professor Akinseye George SAN, President of the Centre for Socio-legal Studies (CSLS), as the lead speaker, accompanied by a distinguished panel comprising Hon Justice (Dr) Ishaq Bello OFR, retired Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Dr Adamu Aliyu, Hon Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Jigawa State, Mr Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, CON, Founding Partner of Rotimi Jacobs and Co., Mr Omamuzo Erebe, Hon Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of Delta State Ministry of Justice, and Mr Chinonye Obiagwu SAN, the Founding Director and National Coordinator of the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), as the moderator of the session.

Throughout the engaging session, the esteemed panellists unanimously endorsed the ACJA as a critical milestone in reforming the nation’s criminal justice system. They underscored its pivotal role in ensuring efficiency, fairness, and transparency in the administration of justice, alongside expediting legal processes.

Salamatu Sidi, the Head of the NBA Human Rights Institute (HRI), coordinated the session at the conference, which provided a platform for an in-depth analysis of the Administration of the criminal justice system in Nigeria during the 8 years of the implementation of the 2015 legislation. Notably, the insights garnered from the 2023 Annual General Conference of the NBA are expected to significantly contribute to the ongoing review of the ACJA, reflecting the collective efforts and commitments of Nigeria’s legal fraternity in this crucial endeavour.

The active participation and profound contributions of the conference’s resource speakers were acknowledged, with the assurance of the Nigerian Bar Association’s resolute support in ensuring the success of the ongoing review process. Particularly, praise was extended to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for appointing Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN as the esteemed Attorney General of the Federation, a move widely commended for its wisdom and foresight. The President’s unwavering commitment to the successful review of the ACJA has garnered widespread respect and confidence, echoing the collective optimism for a favourable outcome.

As this review moves forward, the commitment of the Nigerian Bar Association and its key stakeholders continues to be a cornerstone of progress, demonstrating a collective determination to fortify the principles of justice and fairness within the Nigerian legal landscape.
