NBA Calls for Comments on Draft Guidelines for Technology Use in Legal Practice

The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP) is seeking input from legal professionals on its newly proposed draft guidelines governing the use of technology in the legal profession in Nigeria.

The NBA-SLP Technology and Law Committee recently released three draft guidance documents for public review and comment:

  1. Draft Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Legal Profession in Nigeria
  2. Draft Privacy Guidance for Lawyers in Nigeria
  3. Draft Guidance Note on the Implementation of Information Technology Solutions for Law Firms and Legal Departments

These drafts aim to clarify lawyers’ professional obligations and best practices regarding the use of technologies like artificial intelligence, protecting client data privacy, and adopting IT solutions in their firms and legal departments.

According to an email from the NBA-SLP to its members, the NBA recognises that technology is rapidly reshaping law practice. As such, these guidelines are intended to assist legal practitioners in understanding and complying with the Rules of Professional Conduct, the Nigerian Data Protection Act 2023, and other relevant laws and regulations in the context of technological adoption.

All legal professionals and stakeholders are encouraged to review the draft documents available on the NBA-SLP website (https://nbaslp.org/committees/technology-law/) and submit feedback on areas such as clarity, accuracy, best practice recommendations, and any additional topics that should be covered.

Comments and suggestions can be sent to:

techlaw@nbaslp.org by May 16th.

The NBA-SLP values contributions from the legal community to ensure these guidelines are comprehensive and practical resources as technology advances legal service delivery.

Fernandez Marcus-Obiene,

Chairman of the Technology & Law Committee
