Imo State Lawyer Garricks Anyanwu Found Murdered

The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the murder of lawyer Garricks Anyanwu, who was tragically killed by assailants in his hometown of Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

The decomposing body of Mr Anyanwu was discovered in a bush on April 5th, a week after his death. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the ongoing investigation in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

While details surrounding the motive and identity of the assailants remain unclear, the family of the deceased has opted for a burial scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th. Members of the family have approached the police with a sworn affidavit to facilitate the recovery of Mr. Anyanwu’s remains for immediate interment.

This tragic incident adds to a concerning pattern of violence against legal professionals in Imo State. Just over a year ago, magistrate Nnaemeka Ugboma, a former chairman of the Obudiagwa Customary Court, fell victim to a similar fate.

Mr. Ugboma was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen during a court session in the Oguta Local Government Area on February 2, 2023. The assailants, who arrived on motorcycles, targeted the 55-year-old magistrate before fleeing the scene.

Police Initiate Investigation Amidst Rising Concerns

Mr. Okoye, while confirming the recent murder of Mr. Anyanwu, has assured the public of an official statement once the investigation is concluded, promising to shed more light on this troubling development.
