NBA-YLF Under President Maikyau: Driving Positive Change and Empowerment for Young Lawyers in Nigeria

Dear Colleagues,

I am grateful to reflect on the past six months since assuming the esteemed position of leading the Young Lawyers Forum (YLF) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) alongside my dedicated team. The trust and privilege bestowed upon us by the NBA-YLF membership are deeply appreciated, and we remain committed to advancing our collective agenda for the betterment of young lawyers across Nigeria.

Under the visionary leadership of Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, our agenda to revitalize the YLF and foster prosperous professional career development for young lawyers has seen significant progress. Allow me to present a comprehensive overview of our achievements and ongoing initiatives:

I. We successfully partnered with the Breath of Freedom Foundation to provide pro-bono legal services to indigent individuals. Through our efforts, we have secured the release of three inmates from the Kuje Correctional Services in Abuja, leveraging our limited resources for impactful social change.

II. An exciting collaboration is in the works with Mutual Commitment Limited, a Chinese company, to sponsor YLF members for IT training in China. While still in the pipeline, this initiative promises to enhance the technological skills of our members and broaden their professional horizons.

III. The highlight of our endeavours was the highly successful National Summit held in January 2024. Themed “Breaking the Old Order of Governance and Advocacy,” the summit brought together esteemed speakers such as Chief Emeka Ozoani SAN, the Chairman of the NBA Welfare Committee, Hon. Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN, Boma Alabi SAN, Folashade Alli SAN, and Joyce Oduah, among others.

The presence of Senator Aminu Tambuwal and youth representatives from the Presidency added to the event’s significance, making it a resounding success.

IV. We have solidified a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Apt Response, facilitated by Boma Alabi SAN, securing an annual commitment of 2 million Naira for the YLF. This partnership will provide financial support and offer free training opportunities for our members over the next three years.

V. In collaboration with the United Bank of Africa (UBA), we are progressing towards executing an MOU to train 50 YLF members in insolvency with Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners in Nigeria (Bripan). Additionally, UBA will provide periodic training sessions and support our programs, bolstering our members’ professional development.

VI. Our engagement with the Ministry of Youth and young parliamentarians focuses on reviewing and advocating for legislation that may disproportionately affect young people, particularly in taxation. Through these efforts, we aim to safeguard the interests of young lawyers and ensure a conducive legal environment for their growth.

VII. To enhance accessibility and transparency, we have launched an official website for the YLF, serving as a central hub for tracking our achievements and accessing relevant information. This digital platform underscores our commitment to effective communication and engagement with our members and stakeholders.

In addition to our accomplishments, I must acknowledge the invaluable insights gained so far. While our progress is commendable, challenges persist, especially concerning financial constraints and the need for robust professional career development opportunities. As we continue to steer these hurdles, I extend a passionate appeal to our esteemed seniors and learned silks to support our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to drive the career growth of YLF members.

In conclusion, I reiterate my gratitude for the unwavering support of our members and reaffirm our commitment to advancing the interests of young lawyers in Nigeria. With the collective efforts of our dedicated team and the backing of the NBA leadership, I am confident that the YLF will continue to thrive and make meaningful contributions to the legal profession.

Thank you.
