The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, delivered his inaugural promise by catalyzing the inauguration of the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee. This crucial development, in line with Section 15 of the Legal Practitioners Act, sets the stage for a transformative era in legal practice.

The Committee, composed of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation, the Attorneys General of the 36 States, the President of the NBA, and three NBA representatives, commenced its duties on May 15, 2023. Its primary focus was considering recommendations from the NBA Remuneration (White Paper) Committee, which had been adopted during the NEC meeting on June 9, 2022.

The Committee unanimously endorsed the NBA’s recommendations following meticulous deliberations, introducing minor variations. These efforts culminated in issuing the Legal Practitioners Remuneration (for Business, Legal Service, and Representation) Order, 2023, on May 16, 2023.

The publication, recorded as Gazette No. 0102 in Vol. 110, Government Notice No. 68, marks a historic achievement, breaking a 32-year hiatus since the last remuneration order.

This significant accomplishment not only underscores the commitment of the NBA’s leadership to the welfare and professional interests of legal practitioners but also paves the way for a reinvigorated legal landscape.

The Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee’s actions are poised to influence and shape the course of legal practice, aligning with contemporary demands and setting the standard for years to come.
