Attorney Provides Clarity on Nnamdi Kanu's Trial.

Alloy Ejimakor, the legal representative of Nnamdi Kanu and the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has shed light on the recent court proceedings surrounding Kanu’s trial. Amidst circulating reports suggesting conditions were imposed for Kanu’s trial, Ejimakor has vehemently denied such claims, stating that they are misleading.

Ejimakor emphasised that during the latest court hearing on April 17, 2024, the primary focus was on the application for the restoration of Kanu’s bail. This application aligns with directives from the Supreme Court, which ruled on December 15, 2023, that Kanu’s bail was erroneously revoked due to a misunderstanding regarding his alleged abscondment.

In a statement addressing the media, Ejimakor clarified that Kanu, while on bail, was forced to flee his home and the country due to an illegal invasion by heavily armed military officers. This invasion compelled Kanu to prioritise his safety and well-being, a decision any reasonable person would make in such circumstances.

Furthermore, Ejimakor highlighted the prosecution’s deceptive actions, which sought to portray Kanu as having intentionally absconded from court proceedings. He argued that Kanu’s absence directly resulted from the unlawful actions taken against him, making it unjust to label him a bail jumper.

Drawing from the Supreme Court’s rulings and constitutional provisions, Ejimakor stressed the Federal High Court’s obligation to reinstate Kanu’s bail. He also emphasised the need for fair trial rights, particularly given the severity of the charges Kanu faces, which include the death penalty.

Ejimakor clarified that Kanu’s legal team had not presented any conditions to the court at any point, as they lacked the authority to do so. Instead, they focus on ensuring Kanu’s access to a fair trial and adequate preparation for his defence.

In conclusion, Ejimakor underscored the ethical duty of lawyers to uphold the principles of justice and fair treatment for their clients. He reiterated the importance of adhering to legal procedures and respecting the rights of the accused, including Nnamdi Kanu.

As the legal proceedings continue, the pursuit of justice for Nnamdi Kanu remains a paramount concern. Ejimakor and his team are steadfast in their commitment to defending their client’s rights within the confines of the law.

The court has set a hearing date for Philip Shaibu’s Lawsuit Against Edo State Assembly.
