Eastern Zone Lawyers Protest Exclusion from Unity Bar Abuja Branch Election.

Dear Sir,

We, the members of Otu Okaiwu Abuja, are deeply troubled by the recent decision of the Unity Bar Electoral Committee to exclude candidates from the Eastern Zone from contesting for the position of Assistant Secretary in the upcoming branch election.

This exclusionary policy, as stated in Notice No. 3, dated April 8, 2024, goes against the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and professionalism that should guide our electoral processes. We believe that such arbitrary restrictions on candidates based on their region of origin are unjust and discriminatory.

Join the Nigerian Bar Association Human Rights Institute in Advancing Justice, Legal Independence, and Human Rights Advocacy in Nigeria.

While we acknowledge the need to zone certain positions within the Nigerian Bar Association Abuja Branch, it has historically been the practice to zone only the offices of the Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. The decision to exclude candidates from the Eastern Zone from the Assistant Secretary position is unprecedented and lacks justification.

Furthermore, we assert that the branch’s Electoral Committee does not have the authority to redesign the zoning order. By publishing a second set of electoral guidelines that exclude the Eastern Zone from contesting for the Assistant Secretary position, the Committee has overstepped its mandate and created unnecessary tension within the branch.

We call on the Unity Bar Electoral Committee to reconsider its decision and uphold the principles of fairness and inclusivity in the electoral process. We urge the Committee to rescind the exclusionary policy and ensure that all qualified candidates, regardless of their region of origin, are given equal opportunity to contest for positions within the branch.

Sincerely,

Ejiofor Onwuaso

President, Otu Okaiwu Abuja
