NBA President Addresses Controversy Over Open University Law Graduate's Testimony

Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding the testimony of Vera Anyim, a graduate of the National Open University (NOUN), who claimed to have earned a B.Sc. degree in law. Anyim’s testimony, given at the Dunamis Church in Abuja, sparked nationwide debate after Pastor Enenche challenged the validity of her degree during the church service.

During her testimony, Anyim asserted that she had graduated with a “BSc in Law” from NOUN, prompting Pastor Enenche to question her claim and accuse her of lying. This incident led to a significant public outcry, with divergent opinions emerging from various quarters of Nigerian society.

Addressing the situation at a press conference to unveil the theme and logo of the 2024 Annual General Conference of the NBA, themed “Pressing Forward: A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria,” President Maikyau expressed his perspective. He emphasised that no university in Nigeria offers a B.Sc. in Law and criticised Anyim for asserting a title that does not exist.

Maikyau acknowledged that he had viewed the video of Anyim’s testimony and noted Pastor Enenche’s scepticism regarding the authenticity of her claims.

He commended Pastor Enenche for his discernment in questioning Anyim’s assertion and highlighted the importance of clarity in academic credentials, particularly within the legal profession.

Drawing from his legal expertise, Maikyau explained that Anyim’s testimony, despite her challenges, reflected a proficiency level in English commonly associated with legal professionals. He praised Pastor Enenche for employing a style reminiscent of cross-examination in his interaction with Anyim, noting his astute questioning regarding the nature of her degree.

Maikyau emphasised that the designation of a law degree as a B.Sc. is inaccurate and misleading. He underscored that such titles are not determined by the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, or the NBA. Instead, he asserted that Anyim’s attempt to claim a B.Sc. in law was deceitful and deserving of scrutiny.

In conclusion, Maikyau urged the public to focus on Nigeria’s broader issues and refrain from expending unnecessary energy on individuals who propagate falsehoods. He emphasised the importance of upholding the integrity of academic credentials.

He reiterated the need for clarity and accuracy in all forms of communication, especially within professional contexts like the legal sphere. As the controversy surrounding Anyim’s testimony unfolds, Maikyau’s remarks remind us of the importance of integrity and truthfulness in all aspects of public discourse.

Pastor Enenche’s Response to Vera Anyim’s Testimony

Determining whether Pastor Enenche was right in his character disposition towards Vera Anyim during her testimony is subjective and can depend on various factors, including personal perspectives and cultural norms.

From one viewpoint, some may argue that Pastor Enenche exhibited discernment and a commitment to truthfulness by questioning the accuracy of Anyim’s claims. In this view, holding individuals accountable for the accuracy of their statements, especially within a religious context where testimonies hold significant weight, is seen as a responsible and necessary action.

On the other hand, others may argue that Pastor Enenche’s reaction was inappropriate or unnecessarily harsh. They may contend that publicly challenging Anyim’s testimony could have been handled with more sensitivity and discretion, particularly considering the potential impact on her reputation and dignity.

Ultimately, whether Pastor Enenche’s character disposition was right or not is a matter of interpretation and perspective. It’s essential to consider the context of the situation, including cultural norms, religious practices, and the intentions behind Pastor Enenche’s actions, when evaluating his behavior.
