The court has set a hearing date for Philip Shaibu's Lawsuit Against Edo State Assembly

A Federal High Court in Abuja has slated April 19th as the pivotal day for the commencement of the legal battle initiated by Philip Shaibu, the recently ousted Deputy Governor of Edo State. The lawsuit zeroes in on the state’s legislative arm, particularly scrutinizing the orchestration behind Shaibu’s impeachment.

The courtroom drama unfolded under the auspices of Justice Inyang Ekwo, where a team of defence attorneys, led by Alex Ejesieme, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), made an appearance to secure a hearing date. Despite the case, bearing the mark FHC/ABJ/CS/405/24, not being on the day’s agenda initially, the proactive approach of the defence ensured its swift attention.

This development follows a brief hiatus owing to a public holiday during which the court remained inaccessible. Nevertheless, the courtroom excitedly buzzed as Shaibu’s legal team reaffirmed their adherence to prior court directives. “So, in obedience to the court, we came today,” reiterated one of the defence lawyers.

Justice Ekwo, however, elucidated that he couldn’t proceed with a case absent from the court files, instructing the legal representatives to liaise with the court registrar to secure the next available date. Consequently, April 19th was earmarked for the commencement of Shaibu’s legal pursuit for justice.

Shaibu’s lawsuit stems from his controversial impeachment, which triggered legal and political debates within Edo State. In his suit, Shaibu, represented by O.A. Gbadamosi, SAN, named various parties, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Edo State House of Assembly, as respondents.

The lawsuit centres on allegations of procedural irregularities, biased conduct, and violating Shaibu’s constitutional right to a fair hearing during the impeachment proceedings.

As the legal battle intensifies, all eyes are on the impending courtroom showdown, poised to unravel the intricacies surrounding Shaibu’s impeachment saga and its implications for the political landscape of Edo State.
