The recently impeached Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has taken steps to file a formal petition against the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, in light of his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Shaibu, represented by legal counsel B.I. Dakum and Co. has reached out to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, seeking a complaint form. The move follows an investigation by a seven-man panel into misconduct and perjury allegations against Shaibu, which led to his impeachment.

The panel, convened by Chief Judge Okungbowa, has faced criticism regarding its procedures and conclusions. Shaibu’s legal team, led by Adaze A. Emwanta, a former Commissioner for Information and Orientation under Governor Godwin Obaseki, alleges that Justice Okungbowa abused his office, engaged in official misconduct, and violated his oath of office.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Shaibu’s solicitors express their client’s intention to file a formal complaint under the Judicial Discipline Regulations 2017. The letter outlines the allegations against Justice Okungbowa and requests a complaint form to facilitate filing.

Shaibu’s move signifies a significant development in the ongoing political turmoil in Edo State following his impeachment. It highlights the legal battles and disputes surrounding the process and the growing tensions between political factions in the state.
