The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has levelled serious allegations against the deputy governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, accusing him of attempting to sow discord within the party’s ranks in the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and seen by our correspondent, PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, asserted that the party’s legal team is poised and ready to confront Shaibu.

This statement follows Shaibu’s threat to take legal action after losing the party’s gubernatorial primary election.

The controversy ignited when Shaibu conducted a parallel primary election, declaring himself the party’s gubernatorial candidate. However, PDP officially declared Asue Ighodalo as the rightful winner of the primary election held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Abdullahi affirmed that PDP remains undeterred by Shaibu’s legal threats, stating, “We are not worried. We wish the deputy governor well on his journey to the court. We are waiting for him.”

Expressing concern over Shaibu’s actions, Abdullahi questioned the deputy governor’s unilateral stance. He emphasized that ten contenders were in the primary, and the majority accepted the party’s reconciliation efforts.

He added, “We cannot continue running this party like this. Is he the only one who contested the primary? Why is he going on like this?”

Abdullahi highlighted the potential crisis if Shaibu refuses to reconcile, underscoring the party’s legal readiness to defend its position.

“We have a legal department,” Abdullahi concluded, signifying the party’s preparedness to address any legal challenges posed by Shaibu’s actions.
