Tragic Auto Crash Claims 19 Lives on Okene-Lokoja Highway in Kogi State

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a devastating auto crash that resulted in the loss of nineteen lives on the Okene-Lokoja highway in Kogi State. According to Jonas Agwu, the FRSC’s Corps Education Officer, the accident involved a collision between a truck and a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Kano State.

The collision occurred in the Okene area, leaving twenty-two individuals, all male, involved in the tragic incident. Unfortunately, nineteen of them lost their lives in the collision, while one person sustained injuries. Two individuals were fortunate to be rescued unharmed by FRSC operatives.

Agwu highlighted the challenges faced by emergency rescue teams, enduring over three hours of inferno at the crash site as they worked tirelessly to rescue victims. The intensity of the collision led to a fire inferno that claimed the lives of those trapped in the vehicles.

This tragic accident underscores the perilous nature of the Okene-Lokoja highway and the dangers it poses to motorists. The road, known for its notorious reputation for accidents, has been a cause for concern among road safety authorities and commuters alike.

The lack of adequate road infrastructure, poor maintenance, and reckless driving behaviours contribute to the heightened risk of accidents along this route.

Authorities are urged to prioritise measures to improve road safety on the Okene-Lokoja highway and implement strategies to mitigate the recurrence of such devastating accidents.
