In light of this news, it is essential to acknowledge the situation’s complexities and challenges in ensuring long-term peace and stability in the Lake Chad Basin. While Mohammed and Modu’s surrender is a significant step forward, sustained efforts will be required to address the root causes of extremism and promote reconciliation and rehabilitation for former militants. Two Teenagers Surrender to Military Forces, Signalling Progress In The Fight Against Insurgency

In a significant turn of events in the ongoing battle against the Boko Haram insurgency, two individuals, identified as 19-year-old Abubakar Mohammed, also known as Garba, and 13-year-old Bana Modu, have surrendered to the military forces.

The surrender took place in the Monguno Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria, under the jurisdiction of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Sector 3. Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the Chief Military Public Information Officer-Ndjamena, announced the event.

The decision of Mohammed and Modu to surrender themselves to the military marks a notable triumph in the fight against terrorism, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin region. The surrender comes in the wake of the recent success of Operation Nashrul Salam, an operation that employed non-kinetic tactics, including highly effective psychological operations, to combat terrorist activities.

These tactics have evidently influenced the decision of the two individuals to abandon their involvement with Boko Haram and surrender to the MNJTF.

Surrender of Individuals Involved in Planting Explosive Devices Marks Significant Milestone in Counter-Terrorism Efforts

During a preliminary investigation following their surrender, Mohammed and Modu revealed that they had been ordered by Boko Haram militants to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along roads in Doron Baga and Fish Dam, located in the Baga area of Kukawa Local Government Area in Borno State.

However, instead of carrying out their assigned task, the teenagers chose to abandon their mission, escape with the IEDs, and surrender to the MNJTF.

Items recovered from Mohammed and Modu included two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), two mobile phones, and the sum of ₦53,000. This recovery further underscores the success of the MNJTF’s efforts and highlights their commitment to dismantling Boko Haram operations in the region.

Colonel Abdullahi emphasised that the surrender of Mohammed and Modu exemplifies the MNJTF’s dedication to encouraging other terrorists hiding in the Lake Chad islands to lay down their arms and surrender. This initiative is vital to achieving sustainable peace and normalcy in the region.

The MNJTF reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to restoring peace and security to the Lake Chad Basin. This development reflects a positive stride in the fight against terrorism and underscores the importance of continued collaborative efforts among military forces and other regional stakeholders.
