Parents of Abducted Nigerian Schoolgirl Leah Sharibu Respond to Alleged New Marital Status

Introduction: The parents of Leah Sharibu, a Nigerian schoolgirl abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in 2018, have expressed their concerns regarding recent claims about their daughter’s alleged new marital status. Leah, who refused to renounce her Christian faith during her captivity, symbolises resilience and determination.

The Family’s Response: Leah Sharibu’s family found the news of her reported divorce from an ISWAP commander and subsequent marriage to another individual both confusing and disheartening. Dr. Gloria Puldu, the spokesperson for the parents and President of the Leah Foundation, conveyed their sentiments in a statement.

They questioned the reports’ validity and the sources indicating Leah had remarried and had two children. The absence of photographic or video evidence raised doubts about the accuracy of these claims.

The Call for Government Action: The family expressed frustration over the lack of concrete information about Leah’s whereabouts and condition. They wondered why Nigerian security forces had not provided verified updates and why the government had not taken more decisive action to secure her release. Despite President Buhari’s promise to redouble efforts for Leah’s return, her family felt disappointed by the lack of progress.

Leah’s father, Nathan Sharibu, had previously pleaded for government assistance in securing his daughter’s release, emphasizing the need for urgency. The recent abduction of students from Zamfara highlighted the ongoing security challenges Nigerian parents face.

An Appeal to President Bola Tinubu: Given the perceived inaction during President Buhari’s tenure, Dr. Puldu called upon President Bola Tinubu to prioritize Leah’s freedom. They felt that the former president had left office without fulfilling his promise to rescue Leah. The family also noted the international community’s apparent neglect of Leah’s plight and urged renewed attention to her case.

Her family’s plea for release underscores the need for continued efforts to bring her home safely. The international community is urged to prioritize the rescue of Leah and others in similar situations and to hold Nigeria accountable for the safety and protection of its citizens.
