It’s deeply concerning to learn about the discriminatory practices at the Chinese supermarket in Abuja, where Nigerians are reportedly barred from shopping. Businesses should operate with inclusivity and respect for all customers regardless of their nationality or background.

Afam Osigwe Speaks Out: Outrage Over Discrimination Against Nigerians at Abuja Chinese Supermarket.

Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, strongly condemned the discriminatory practice of a Chinese supermarket at the China General Chamber of Commerce along Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Road in Abuja.

The supermarket is acclaimed as a destination for Chinese cuisine and beverages. Its restriction of entry exclusively to individuals of Chinese descent has sparked outrage among residents and raised concerns about discriminatory behaviour in Nigerian businesses.

Osigwe likened the supermarket’s policy to racism and emphasised the need for heightened awareness and measures to address such discriminatory practices. He called on the Nigerian government to take immediate action and thoroughly investigate the issue to ensure that such occurrences do not happen anywhere within the country.

On Sunday, when we visited the supermarket to confirm the authenticity of the claim, security personnel at the gate confirmed that the store’s management gave the directive without giving reasons at the beginning of 2024.

The incident gained attention after a video posted by X Daily showed an unidentified FCT resident expressing discontent about being denied entry to the supermarket.

The resident highlighted the discriminatory policy, stating that Nigerian citizens were not allowed to enter or purchase anything from the establishment. This revelation sparked widespread criticism and led to further reports of similar experiences from other individuals.

Otunba AbdulFattah @OyedeleFatai corroborated the claim, stating that he was denied entry twice this year. He expressed frustration over the discriminatory practice and called for action from relevant government agencies.

Senior Advocate Criticises Discriminatory Practice and Calls for Government Action

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is a government agency in Nigeria responsible for promoting fair competition in the marketplace and protecting the rights of consumers. The commission enforces laws and regulations that prevent anti-competitive practices, ensure transparency and fairness in business transactions, and safeguard consumer interests.

In response to the allegations, Nicholas Utsalo, the Senior Public Relations Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), refrained from offering a comment, citing protocol allowing the Executive Vice Chairman to address the press. However, he assured the public that an investigation into the allegations would be conducted.

The discriminatory practice of the Chinese supermarket has raised concerns about the prevalence of such behaviours in Nigerian businesses. It highlights the need for stricter regulations and enforcement mechanisms to prevent discrimination and ensure equal access to goods and services for all citizens.

The Nigerian government must take decisive action to eradicate such discriminatory practices and impose sanctions on businesses guilty of engaging in discriminatory behaviour. This includes implementing stringent regulations, conducting thorough investigations into reported incidents, and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

Additionally, awareness campaigns and sensitization programmes can help educate business owners and the public about the importance of inclusivity and non-discrimination in commercial establishments.
