Afam Osigwe SAN Addresses Rising Insecurity in Nigeria, Calls for Immediate Action.
Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN’s impassioned address underscores the pressing need for swift and comprehensive measures to address the escalating insecurity plaguing Nigeria.
Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN is a distinguished figure within Nigeria’s legal community, renowned for his tireless commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law. With a distinguished career spanning decades, Osigwe has established himself as a formidable advocate for human rights and social justice, championing causes that seek to uphold the rights and dignity of all citizens.
Osigwe’s involvement in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges emphasises his belief in safeguarding the lives and well-being of all citizens. Through his vocal advocacy and principled stance on pressing issues, Osigwe continues to inspire positive change and advance the cause of justice in Nigeria.
Mazi Afam Osigwe SAN, addressing the ongoing monthly general meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association Garki Branch Abuja, commonly known as the Liberty Bar, voiced grave concerns over the escalating insecurity plaguing Nigeria. Highlighting the alarming surge in kidnappings, incessant killings, and the perceived lack of action from security agencies, Osigwe underlined the urgent need for effective intervention to safeguard citizens’ lives and preserve national security.
Particularly troubling to the nation is the rampant “one chance” phenomenon gripping Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city. He pointed to the recent abduction of Barrister Chris Agidy, who has endured captivity for over 100 days, as a distressing example of the security crisis. Osigwe lamented the apparent indifference of law enforcement agencies towards addressing such incidents promptly and decisively.
Expressing dismay at the disregard for human life exhibited by kidnappers and the seeming apathy of security forces, Osigwe urged the Nigerian Bar Association to condemn the inadequate response of security agencies to kidnapping and violence. He emphasized the urgent need for a concerted effort to address the pervasive insecurity plaguing the nation.
Moreover, his remarks shed light on the growing threat posed by insecurity to the legal profession, with lawyers increasingly becoming targets of kidnappers. This disturbing trend not only undermines the safety of legal practitioners but also instils fear and uncertainty within the legal community.
In addition to these concerns, recent updates further highlight the gravity of Nigeria’s security situation. The proliferation of armed banditry, terrorist attacks, and communal violence poses a significant threat to the safety and well-being of Nigerians, investors, and businesses alike. The unabated cycle of insecurity hampers economic development, undermines social cohesion, and erodes public confidence in the government’s ability to provide security and protect citizens’ lives.
As Nigeria grapples with the escalating security crisis, urgent and decisive action is imperative to restore peace, stability, and security across the nation. The Nigerian Bar Association and other stakeholders must continue to advocate for robust measures to address insecurity and ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
