The legal saga surrounding Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been ongoing since 2015. Charged with offences related to terrorism and treasonable felonies, Kanu’s trial has been marked by numerous twists and turns. Initially granted bail on health grounds in April 2017, Kanu fled Nigeria following a military raid on his residence in September 2017.

His trial was temporarily suspended after the Court of Appeal acquitted him in October 2022, declaring his rendition from Kenya illegal. However, the Federal Government appealed this decision, leading to the Supreme Court ordering the resumption of Kanu’s trial in December 2023.

Court Proceedings: In a recent court session at the Federal High Court in Abuja, proceedings centred on Kanu’s bail application and preparations for the trial’s continuation. Both the defence and prosecution presented new legal representatives. Alloy Ejimakor, representing the defence, filed a bail application citing Kanu’s deteriorating health and alleged threats to his life by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Adegboyega Awomolo, leading the prosecution, opposed the bail application, urging the court to proceed with the trial. Additionally, the defence filed a preliminary objection seeking to address concerns about document confiscation and eavesdropping by the DSS.

Court Decision: Justice Binta Nyako, presiding over the case, expressed frustration at the frequent delays and procedural issues. She granted Kanu permission to wear plain clothes provided by his legal team. She adjourned the matter to March 19 for a ruling on the bail application and March 20 for the trial’s continuation.
