This revelation came to light during a significant event in the law enforcement calendar – the 14th edition of the Biennial Police Games, known as “Oluyole 2024”, held at the prestigious Ilaji Resorts Hotel in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. At this event, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, emphasized that the prevailing security situation in Nigeria is not as dire as commonly perceived.

He underscored that a considerable portion of the reported kidnapping cases is rooted in deceit, with individuals either feigning their own abductions to extort money or orchestrating elaborate schemes to extract ransom from their families.

Adejobi’s remarks shed light on the pervasive influence of social media in shaping public perceptions of security issues in Nigeria. He cautioned against disseminating unverified information, noting that many sensationalized reports circulated online are outdated or misleading. Instead, he advocated for a more data-driven approach to analyzing security challenges, urging a reliance on accurate information collated by law enforcement authorities.

The Director of Sports for the Nigerian Police Force, CP Patric Athairu, echoed Adejobi’s sentiments, emphasizing the role of the Police Games in unearthing latent talents within the force. He revealed plans to leverage these discoveries by collaborating with relevant federations to provide support and opportunities for budding athletes.
