NBA President YC Maikyau pays Tribute To Hon. Justice Ahmad Olanrewaju Belgore

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, on behalf of the NBA’s National Executive Committee and the people of Kwara State, mourns the recent death of one of their esteemed statesmen, Honorable Justice Ahmad Olanrewaju Belgore.

Kamaldeen Gambari, Esq., Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Ilorin branch, Kwara State, announced his demise on Tuesday night.

Born on April 18, 1953, in Ilorin, Justice Belgore dedicated his life to pursuing justice and legal excellence. He received his legal education at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he obtained an LL.B. (Hons.) specialising in Islamic Law in 1978.

Subsequently, he was enrolled at the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, and admitted to the Supreme Court of Nigeria as a Solicitor and Advocate in July 1979.

NBA President Pays Tribute to Late Jurist Belgore’s Legacy

Throughout his illustrious career, Justice Belgore served in various capacities, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian judiciary. He was appointed Notary Public in 1987 and later served as a judge of the High Court of Justice, Kwara State, from August 1990 to 2006. He also served as a Resident High Court Judge in the Offa Judicial Division of Kwara State from August 1994 to September 1999.

His commitment to justice extended beyond Nigeria’s borders. Justice Belgore was seconded to the Judiciary of the Republic of the Gambia, where he served as a Justice of Appeal and later as Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the Gambia until December 2005.

In April 2006, Justice Belgore was appointed to the Court of Appeal in Nigeria, where he continued to uphold the principles of fairness and equity. He served as the Presiding Justice of the Sharia Panel of the Court of Appeal in 2008 and later became the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ekiti Division, in 2015.

His contributions to the legal profession were widely recognized. In October 2015, he was appointed a Body of Benchers of Nigeria member and a Life Bencher in February 2021.

Justice Belgore retired from active service on April 18, 2023, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. However, his legacy continues to inspire future generations of legal practitioners.

President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family, as well as to the people of Ilorin and the Nigerian Bar Association at large. He described Justice Belgore as a complete gentleman and a judicial officer who served the nation with distinction.

The passing of Honorable Justice Ahmad Olanrewaju Belgore leaves a void in the legal community. Still, his contributions will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
