Challenges and Controversy: Fallout from Ondo APC Primary Election

In the aftermath of the Ondo APC primary election, Governor Aiyedatiwa emerged as the declared winner, securing a significant victory with 48,569 votes, as announced by the party’s leadership.

The declaration came following an intense electoral process marked by high stakes and heightened tensions. Ahmed Ododo, Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee and Governor of Kogi State, officially pronounced Aiyedatiwa’s win in a viral video on various platforms.

However, amidst the celebrations of Aiyedatiwa’s supporters, reports surfaced of disturbances and violence in the Ifedore area, leading to the cancellation of election results there. Such incidents raised concerns about the fairness and integrity of the electoral process, prompting criticism from various stakeholders.

One vocal critic was Mrs Folakemi Omogoroye, a female aspirant in the primary election, who raised allegations of irregularities and called for outright poll cancellation. In a press statement sent to SaharaReporters, Omogoroye expressed dismay over what she termed the “complete rape of democracy.”

Examining the Aftermath of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s Victory Amidst Allegations of Irregularities

She recounted the absence of election officials and voting materials at several polling centres, which hindered her and her supporters from exercising their democratic rights.

Omogoroye’s statement highlighted her meticulous preparation and financial commitment to the party, underlining her deep disappointment with the electoral process’s handling. She called upon the party’s leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to intervene and annul the purported election results, citing a breach of trust and a failure to uphold the principles of free and fair elections.

In her impassioned plea, Omogoroye emphasised her unwavering belief in the party and its ideals, expressing concern that the reported irregularities undermined the credibility of the APC. She lamented the mockery that such incidents invited from other political parties and reiterated her commitment to seeking justice through legal avenues if necessary.

The outcry from Omogoroye and other aggrieved stakeholders underscored the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process. It also highlighted the challenges facing political parties in ensuring fair and credible primaries, which are essential for upholding democratic principles and fostering trust among party members and the electorate.
