In a tragic incident in Aba, Abia State, a businessman named Emmanuel Okocha lost his life on Friday, allegedly for refusing to give a bribe to police officers from the state’s Rapid Response Squad.

Okocha was shot by a policeman in Aba, the commercial hub of the state, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, for allegedly refusing to give him (Njok) money at a checkpoint.

The victim, hailing from the Abiriba community in Ohafia Local Government Area, was reportedly shot dead despite having all his vehicle particulars and driver’s licence up to date.

Confirming the incident, the Abia State Police spokesperson, ASP Maureen Chinaka, released a statement on Saturday disclosing that the officer involved in the shooting, Corporal Obagi Njok from the Abayi Police Division, has been arrested.

The police assured that necessary investigations would be conducted, and appropriate punishment would be meted out to the culprit.

Expressing regret over the incident, the police authorities extended condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. ASP Chinaka emphasised that the Abia State Police Command remains committed to upholding professionalism and the rule of law, condemning any misconduct or indiscipline among its officers.

The officer’s arrest underscores the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. It also reminds police officers to adhere strictly to their professional code of conduct and refrain from acts that undermine public trust and safety. As investigations continue, further updates on the case are awaited.
