Bobrisky Faces Possible Detention Over Naira Abuse Conviction

Controversial Nigerian crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, famously known as Bobrisky, is facing the possibility of spending the 2024 Eid-il-Fitr break behind bars following his recent arrest and trial by a Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024.

The charges against Bobrisky, brought forth by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), revolve around naira abuse and alleged money laundering, with the anti-graft agency filing six counts against him.

During the court proceedings, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of naira abuse but requested leniency, expressing remorse and pledging to educate his social media followers on the legal implications of such actions.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro, presiding over the case, set April 9, 2024, as the date for Bobrisky’s sentencing and ordered that he be held in EFCC custody until then. However, it’s worth noting that the Federal Government had previously declared April 9 and 10, 2024, public holidays to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr festival.

As a result, the sentencing hearing coincides with the holiday break, raising the question of whether the proceedings will occur as scheduled.

Despite the holiday break, Justice Awogboro is uncertain whether he will proceed with the sentencing on April 9 or postpone it to a later date. If the sentencing does occur, Bobrisky would likely spend the holiday in detention.

This development underscores the seriousness of the charges against him and the legal ramifications he faces due to his actions.
