Musicians Support EFCC's Ban on Naira Abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently enforced a ban on the misuse of the Nigerian currency, the Naira. This move has received support from some musicians.

Last week, the EFCC sentenced Bobrisky, a controversial figure, to six months in prison for abusing the Naira. Similarly, Cubana Chief Priest was granted 10 million Naira bail after pleading not guilty to a similar charge.

Despite concerns that the ban on spraying money at parties might affect musicians, some prominent artists have welcomed the development.

Pasuma, Saheed Osupa, and Adewale Ayuba, popular musicians, emphasised the importance of respecting the country’s currency. They explained that while spraying money on musicians is part of African culture, abusing or damaging the Naira reduces its lifespan and shows disrespect.

Pasuma stated that he has never supported Naira abuse and has always encouraged fans to put money in a designated box instead of throwing it around during his performances. Osupa noted that the ban hasn’t negatively impacted his earnings, as fans now tend to place money in boxes provided on stage rather than spray it.

I want to believe that there is a difference between spraying a musician money, and mutilating naira notes- Pasuma.

Ayuba echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the need for respect towards the currency and advocating for responsible behaviour among citizens. He suggested that the government should have conducted more awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of respecting the Naira.

Overall, the musicians believe that while spraying money is part of Nigerian culture, it’s essential to prevent its abuse to maintain the country’s identity and integrity. They also suggest that involving artists in sensitization efforts could help reorient the public’s behaviour over time.
