The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) recently convened its national executive council meeting in the picturesque city of Jos, Plateau State, under the esteemed leadership of President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN.

This significant gathering, hosted by the state governor, His Excellency Caleb Mutfwang, served as a climactic forum for legal colleagues from across the country to engage in robust discussions, deliberations, and decision-making processes aimed at advancing the legal profession and addressing pressing issues facing the nation.

The National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, regarded as the second-highest decision-making body of the NBA, plays a pivotal role in shaping the association’s direction and addressing key legal sector challenges. Comprising various stakeholders, including national officers, past presidents, branch chairmen and secretaries, the NEC reflects a diverse representation of legal professionals and provides a platform for inclusive decision-making.

Empowered by the NBA’s constitution, the NEC holds significant authority, ranging from financial management to appointing representatives to statutory bodies and expressing views on matters of public interest. Additionally, the NEC addresses disputes within branches, highlighting the importance of active participation and engagement in these meetings for all legal practitioners.

Against the backdrop of Jos’s scenic beauty and welcoming ambience, President Maikyau delivered a stirring welcome address, extending warm greetings to all delegates and expressing profound gratitude to Governor Mutfwang and the hospitable people of Plateau State. During the NEC meeting, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State emphasized the critical role of the legal profession in advancing justice for all Nigerians.

He urged unity within the Bar to champion the cause of justice, fairness, and diligent service, contributing to a better and crime-free nation. Governor Mutfwang also commended Jos’s peaceful nature. He expressed gratitude for the Bar’s support during his legal challenges, showcasing the importance of collaboration between the government and the Association.

Throughout the multi-day NEC meeting, delegates engaged in thought-provoking discussions on various issues, aiming to address pressing matters affecting the NBA at both the national and local branch levels. The President reiterated the NBA’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct among its members, stressing the imperative of continuous learning and self-improvement within the legal profession.

Amidst the rigorous deliberations, delegates had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage and vibrant atmosphere of Jos, exploring its iconic landmarks and savouring its culinary delights. President Maikyau encouraged delegates to actively participate in the NEC meeting and embrace the unique experiences the host state offers, Jos.

As the meeting drew to a close on Friday, March 1st, 2024, President Maikyau expressed profound appreciation to all delegates for their invaluable contributions and dedication to the noble cause of justice.
