CJN Ariwoola Assures Magistrates & Lower Court Judges Of Improved Welfare Packages

Many magistrates and lower court judges operate in courtrooms with inadequate facilities, such as outdated equipment, insufficient seating, and poor ventilation. These substandard working conditions can impede their ability to conduct proceedings efficiently and comfortably.

The salaries and benefits of magistrates and lower court judges are often insufficient to meet their basic needs and maintain a decent standard of living. This low remuneration can lead to financial strain and affect morale, potentially impacting the quality of their work.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has reassured magistrates, judges of lower courts, and their staff about enhanced welfare provisions.

The enduring challenges magistrates and lower court judges face, marked by inadequate working conditions and welfare, have garnered widespread concern, prompting urgent calls for improvement.

The spotlight on the plight of these judicial officers was intensified by a viral video in October 2023 showcasing a senior magistrate from Anambra commuting to court on a motorcycle.

Addressing participants at a refresher course for magistrates and judges of lower courts, CJN Ariwoola acknowledged the daily obstacles. He underscored ongoing efforts to enhance their welfare and ameliorate their challenges.

Ariwoola emphasized, “While I am not unmindful of the challenges faced by the Magistrates and Judges of the lower courts, I have this opportunity to offer assurances that proactive steps are being taken to ameliorate the difficulties and to improve the overall welfare of the judicial officers and staff of these courts since this invariably impacts the quality and pace of their service delivery.”

Furthermore, Ariwoola urged transparency, openness, and integrity among the judicial officers, emphasizing their crucial role in fostering trust and confidence in the justice system, particularly within communities often located in remote areas.

The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Justice Salisu Abdullahi, highlighted the program’s objective, which aims to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills in substantive and procedural law. He emphasized the significance of interaction, knowledge-sharing, and strategizing to enhance the quality of judicial services at lower courts.

The refresher course serves as a platform for magistrates and judges to exchange experiences, ideas, and innovative approaches, vital for efficient and effective discharge of their duties. It underscores the imperative of continuous learning and adaptation to evolving legal landscapes, ultimately contributing to the administration of justice in Nigeria.
