Court of Appeal President Urges FCT Minister for Land Amid Surging Caseload

During a ceremony marking the commencement of the 2023/2024 new legal year in Abuja, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the President of the Court of Appeal, appealed to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for a substantial piece of land for the construction of the Abuja Division of the Court. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Mr. Wike.

Justice Dongban-Mensem underscored the urgent requirement for expanded facilities for the Abuja division, citing challenges such as the overwhelming volume of legal documents and a shortage of sufficient storage and office space. She revealed that the Court of Appeal currently grapples with an immense caseload of 39,526 pending cases. In the preceding 2022/2023 legal year, the court received 7,295 appeals and 3,665 motions.

During her address, Justice Dongban-Mensem provided details: “In the 2022/2023 legal year, 7,295 appeals and 3,665 motions were filed in the 20 Divisions of the Court. The court determined 3,765 cases and disposed of 5,617 motions; 1,030 of these appeals had been dismissed and 10,381 allowed. The court still has 39,526 Appeals pending as of 31st of August, 2023. This is an increase from 34,037 pending in the Court in the 2021/2022 Legal Year.”

She also noted that a total of 98 panels were constituted to address election petitions across the country, managing a total of 1,209 petitions. Among these petitions, five were filed at the presidential election petition court and have been concluded. Additionally, a portion of the 147 petitions filed at the senatorial election tribunal has been adjudicated, with 417 petitions related to House of Representatives elections also under consideration.

Furthermore, she pointed out that 557 petitions associated with State Houses of Assembly and 83 gubernatorial election petitions are being addressed. In this context, she emphasized that 28 states participated in the governorship elections, resulting in petitions filed in 24 states.
