Falana Demands Compensation for Deceased Nasarawa Students

Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana has decried the tragic deaths of two students at Nasarawa State University, attributing the incident to “official negligence.” Falana has called for an immediate investigation into the unfortunate event’s circumstances and demanded accountability from the authorities.

The incident occurred during a palliative distribution exercise organized by the state government at the university, where two students lost their lives in a stampede. Falana, in a statement released on Sunday, emphasized the urgent need for compensation for the families of the deceased students, Grace Danladi and Rose Michael.

According to reports, chaos ensued as students scrambled for two 7.5 kg bags of rice and N5,000 allocated to each student by Governor Abdullahi Sule. Falana criticized the university authorities’ lack of organization and foresight, stating that proper planning could have prevented the tragedy.

He highlighted the absence of necessary precautions, such as a standby ambulance and adequate medical facilities, which resulted in injured students being rushed to the Federal Medical Center in Keffi, where two female students were pronounced dead.

Falana insisted on swift prosecution for those found culpable, emphasizing the state government’s and university management’s legal obligation to compensate the grieving families. He underscored the need for justice and accountability in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Moreover, Falana compared the incident to a similar stampede in Lagos, stressing the importance of learning from past mistakes to prevent future tragedies. He urged the Nasarawa State police command to investigate allegations of criminal negligence and hold the culprits accountable.

In light of official statements suggesting the involvement of hoodlums in the distribution exercise, Falana called on the state government and university management to fulfil their legal obligation to compensate the bereaved families of the deceased students.

The call for justice and compensation echoes the sentiments of many as the Nasarawa community mourns the loss of promising young lives due to what Falana describes as “official negligence.”
