In a thought-provoking address during the just-concluded NBA-YLF National Summit 2024, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, emphasized the need for a departure from the old order of governance and advocacy in Nigeria.

Empowering the Next Generation: NBA Unveils Implementation Plan for Mentorship Program

During the summit, President Maikyau announced a groundbreaking mentorship program initiated by the NBA. The program is designed to bridge the gap between experienced legal practitioners and young lawyers.

The mentorship scheme will involve assigning young lawyers to law firms across the country, allowing them to gain practical insights and skills. This initiative is a significant step toward fostering professional development and addressing the issue of unemployment among young lawyers.

The mentorship program, set to commence on February 1, 2024, will kick off with a pilot scheme involving two young lawyers from each of the three zones of the Nigerian Bar Association – East, West, and North.

These individuals will undergo a six-month mentorship program in carefully selected law firms. President Maikyau expressed optimism that this initiative would not only enhance the skills of young lawyers but could also lead to potential employment opportunities.

The NBA president commended the organizers of the NBA-YLF summit for their efforts in bringing together legal minds to deliberate on critical issues. He assured the younger colleagues of the NBA’s continuous support and encouraged them to reach out for assistance in areas deemed crucial for their professional growth.

As the legal community eagerly anticipates the positive impact of these initiatives, the mentorship program stands out as a beacon of hope for aspiring lawyers seeking practical experience in a challenging job market. President Maikyau’s call for a departure from the old order resonates as a rallying cry for positive change within the legal profession.
