Nigerian Bar Association Secures Landmark Legal Victory Against Dame Pauline Tallen
In a groundbreaking legal triumph, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by President Y. C. Maikyau, SAN, has secured a resounding victory against former Minister of Women Affairs Dame Pauline Tallen. The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, granted judgment in favour of the NBA, affirming the sanctity of the judicial system and underscoring the significance of respect for court decisions.
The legal action stemmed from Dame Tallen’s statement branding a Federal High Court judgment as a “kangaroo judgment.” The NBA, represented by Messrs J. O. Aikpokpo Martins, Esq, Olukunle Edun, Esq., Eseagwu Augustine Nwabueze, Esq., and T. J. J. Danjuma, Esq, sought a declaration that her statement was unconstitutional, amounted to contempt of court, and requested appropriate remedies.

Anne Agi, Esq, counsel for the NBA, successfully presented the Originating Summons and played a video of Dame Tallen’s statement in open court. In a landmark decision, the court upheld several reliefs sought by the NBA, including a declaration of contempt, an order directing Dame Tallen to publish a personal apology, and an injunction restraining her from holding public office without compliance.
In its judgment, the court highlighted the unconstitutionality, recklessness, and contemptuous nature of Dame Tallen’s statement. The defendant was given 30 days to publish a personally signed apology and retraction, failing which a perpetual injunction would take effect.
Ms. Anne Agi, expressing gratitude to the court, noted that the judgment reinforces accountability for public figures and upholds the rule of law. She emphasized that the victory is not just for the NBA but for the entire legal community, underscoring the importance of respecting judicial decisions.
President Y. C. Maikyau’s leadership and commitment to defending the rule of law were pivotal in this legal triumph.
