Diesel Tank Explosion Claims Two Lives at Canadian High Commission in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has confirmed that a diesel tank explosion caused a devastating fire at the Canadian High Commission in Abuja. The incident occurred at the High Commission’s building at 13010G, Palm Close, Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District.
According to FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, the explosion occurred around 10:45 a.m. while a five-man team serviced two MIKANO generators in the generator house. The FCT Fire Service successfully contained the fire by 12:30 p.m., with ambulances from the Ministry of Defence, Federal Fire Service, and FEMA on standby.

Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in the explosion, while two others sustained severe burns and were rushed to the Trauma Center at the National Hospital, Abuja. The explosion occurred when a tank containing 2,000 litres of diesel in the generator house detonated, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries.
FEMA’s acting Director-General, Mohammed Sabo, expressed his condolences and urged caution when handling petroleum products, especially with the onset of the dry season. He emphasized the importance of residents utilizing the 112 emergency toll-free number in any disaster or emergency situation.
The incident highlights the need for strict safety protocols when dealing with flammable substances and the importance of prompt emergency response. Authorities and individuals should exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
