Tukur Mamu Rejects Terrorism Financing Allegation.

Tukur Mamu, the publisher of the Kaduna-based Desert Herald Newspaper, has vehemently rejected allegations that he is a financier of terrorism. Through his counsel, J.J. Usman, SAN, Mamu issued a letter dated March 25, 2024, to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), demanding a retraction of the statements within seven days to avoid legal action.

The move comes in response to the Federal Government’s naming of 15 entities, including Mamu, allegedly involved in terrorism financing. The list, released earlier, comprised nine individuals and six Bureaux de Change operators and firms.

In the letter, Mamu’s counsel emphasized that the Nigerian Sanctions Committee lacks the legal authority to designate Mamu as a terrorist financier, especially considering his detention since 2022. The letter highlighted that Mamu has not been designated as such by any court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria.

Furthermore, Mamu’s counsel condemned the Nigerian Sanctions Committee’s actions, characterizing them as violating the rule of natural justice and prejudicial to Mamu’s ongoing trial. Mamu is currently facing trial in SUIT FHCIABJ/CR/96/2023.

The letter demanded an immediate retraction of the publication within seven days of the receipt of the letter. Failure to comply would result in seeking redress in a court of law to address Mamu’s grievances.

The development underscores Mamu’s determination to challenge the allegations and protect his reputation amid ongoing legal proceedings.
