NBAWF CONFERENCE

The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) gathered esteemed members of Nigeria’s legal community at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos for its highly anticipated 2024 Annual General Conference.

Under the theme ‘Beyond the Balance Sheet: Redefining Success for Women in Law,’ the event commemorated International Women’s Day and Month and delved into pivotal discussions surrounding the redefinition of success paradigms for female legal professionals.

Gracing the occasion was a diverse assemblage representing various sectors, including the Bench, the Bar, academia, business, government, and the media.

Notable attendees included distinguished personalities such as Folashade Alli, SAN, Chairperson of the Conference Planning Committee (CPC), and Linda Rose Bala, representing NBA President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN.

In her welcome address, Mrs, Alli underscored the timeliness of this year’s theme, particularly in light of prevailing societal challenges, where success is often narrowly defined in material terms. She emphasized the imperative to broaden the scope of success metrics to encompass personal fulfilment, professional advancement, work-life balance, and societal impact.

“The scales of justice are often tipped against the female gender,” Mrs. Alli remarked. “This gathering serves as a clarion call to challenge conventional notions of success and dismantle the constraints inhibiting women’s equitable progression in the legal sphere.”

Throughout the conference, six plenary sessions navigated diverse topics crucial to advancing female lawyers, including fostering supportive professional ecosystems, leveraging technology for gender equality, mastering personal branding, and defining success on individual terms.

“Success for female lawyers transcends mere professional accolades; it encompasses holistic well-being and societal contributions,” Mrs Alli elucidated. “We aim to empower women to navigate and redefine success on their own terms.”

Attendees were encouraged to engage in intellectual discourse and partake in the vibrant energy and networking opportunities afforded by the dynamic city of Lagos.

As the curtains draw on yet another illuminating NBA Women Forum Conference, the reverberations of its discussions are poised to catalyze tangible change within Nigeria’s legal landscape, fostering a more inclusive and empowering environment for women in law.
