In Memoriam: NBA President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau OON, SAN, Pays Condolence Visit to the Late Governor Akeredolu’s Family



On January 4, 2024, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau OON, SAN, along with his executive team, chairpersons of various NBA branches, distinguished bar leaders such as Mr. George Etomi, a member of the NBA Board of Trustees, and other esteemed Association members including Olawale Fapohunda SAN, Dr. Adekunle Ojo SAN, and Oluseun Abimbola SAN, conveyed their condolences to the family of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi. O. Akeredolu, SAN, at their residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Governor Akeredolu passed away at the age of 67 on December 27th, 2023, after a prolonged battle with protracted prostate cancer while receiving medical treatment in Germany. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), ex-president of the NBA, and former Attorney General of Ondo State, he served as a second-term governor before his demise.

President Maikyau conveyed the deep sense of loss felt by the Legal Community. He said, “This tragedy has left behind a profound void in our hearts.”. Governor Akeredolu answered the eternal call while receiving medical treatment in Germany.

Affectionately known as “Aketi,” YC Maikyau hailed Governor Akeredolu for his multifaceted leadership, unwavering personal convictions, and pivotal roles in both the legal and political arenas.

Until his passing, he chaired the Southern Governors’ Forum, led governors from 17 Southern Nigerian states, and spearheaded security initiatives, including establishing the South-West Security Network (Amotekun).

President Maikyau remarked, “Aketi was unpretentious, unpatronizing, and vocal against injustice, oppression, and subjugation of all kinds.” Born on July 21, 1956, in Owo, Ondo State, to the Late Rev. J. O Ola Akeredolu and Lady Evang. Grace Akeredolu, Governor Akeredolu’s legacy, endures as a dogged leader with an indomitable spirit.

In extending heartfelt condolences, the NBA President, accompanied by legal luminaries, emphasized the significant contributions of Governor Akeredolu to the legal and political landscape. This tribute honours a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, equality, and the betterment of society.
