Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Survives Assassination Attempt

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday evening while en route to an official engagement in Abuja. According to the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, a group of assailants disguised in military attire ambushed the governor’s convoy and opened fire on his vehicle.

Fortunately, the swift response of security personnel thwarted the assailants’ intentions, and the Commissioner emphasized that national security agencies would be conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

In a statement, the Commissioner urged the state’s citizens to maintain vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities. He further highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its people, vowing to prevent any potential threats posed by individuals with malicious political motives.

“The Kogi State Government wishes to notify the public of an attempted assassination on the state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, CON, a short distance from Abuja, during his journey from Lokoja to an official engagement. The assault occurred around 4 pm on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

“The attackers, dressed in military uniforms, ambushed the Governor’s convoy, engaging in random gunfire directed at his vehicle and others in the convoy.

“Thanks to the swift intervention of the governor’s security detail, the sinister plans of the unidentified perpetrators were thwarted. The attacks occurred at three, with the final incident near Kwali Federal Capital Territory at approximately 4.20 p.m.

“We have formally documented the details of these alarming attacks with security agencies at both state and national levels, ensuring a comprehensive investigation to prevent any reoccurrence.

“Recognizing the potential efforts to depict Kogi as insecure ahead of the upcoming Governorship Poll scheduled for November 11, 2023, we are resolute in safeguarding our citizens from security threats posed by desperate individuals instigating violence and terrorism.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies. Rest assured, the government is fully committed to upholding the peace that has prevailed in our state over the last eight years, ensuring it is not compromised by the forces of violent politics.”
