The Nepotism Conundrum: A Page from Buhari's Regretful Legacy

In light of recent revelations about former President Muhammadu Buhari’s regrets during his tenure, it is evident that his nepotistic appointments constitute a significant source of remorse. This article delves into the repercussions of such works and questions whether President Bola Tinubu is following the same divisive path.

Former President Buhari’s Legacy of Nepotism

Nepotism, the practice of favouring family or friends in appointments, has marred the legacy of Nigeria’s immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari. It is a regret that should weigh heavily on his conscience, as it has had far-reaching consequences for the country.

Under Buhari’s leadership from 2015 to 2023, Nigeria experienced a fractured nation due to his flagrant disregard for diversity and harmony. His administration’s nepotistic tendencies led to its infamy as the most underwhelming and lacklustre in Nigeria’s history.

Former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke SAN, aptly described Buhari’s government as “the most incompetent government we’ve ever seen in this country, run by the most incompetent President that this country has ever had and will never have again.” The root of this incompetence can be traced back to the appointment of individuals based on their proximity to the President rather than their merit.

The Cost of Nepotism

Nepotism in appointments comes at a high cost. Merit is often the first casualty when leaders prioritize personal connections over qualifications. Nigeria paid dearly for this approach, witnessing a decline in virtually all development indexes during Buhari’s eight years in office. Even Buhari’s relative, Hadi Sirika, as Minister of Aviation, tarnished Nigeria’s reputation with the ill-fated Nigeria Air project.

Tinubu’s Replication of Nepotism

Unfortunately, President Bola Tinubu seems poised to replicate Buhari’s divisive playbook. His recent appointments suggest a preference for individuals from his southwest region, raising concerns of ethnic bias. Even within his own All Progressives Congress (APC) party, members have expressed dissatisfaction with his sectarians’ appointments.

Civil society groups and individuals have accused Tinubu of promoting an “unseemly pro-ethnic agenda” and prioritizing the South-west in critical appointments. The Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, hailing from the same region as the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Folashodun Shonubi, have fueled allegations of ethnic favouritism.

The Need for Inclusivity

Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and inclusivity is crucial for national unity and development. Nepotism hinders national integration and cohesion, jeopardizing the prosperity Tinubu envisions. When appointments are confined to a particular region, qualified and resourceful Nigerians from the other areas are excluded, ultimately affecting the nation’s progress.

Nepotism fosters impunity and a lack of accountability, as seen in the audacious actions of officials like Hadi Sirika in Buhari’s government. Tinubu must avoid the same divisive path and embrace inclusivity in federal appointments.

In the long run, nepotism benefits no one, and no dynasty or privileged position is immune to change. Nigeria can achieve greatness by leveraging its diversity and embracing inclusivity in all aspects of governance.
