Adamawa Governor Orders Investigation Into Death Of 17-Year-Old Student.

The Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has directed the police commissioner in the state to conduct an investigation into the killing of a 17-year-old senior secondary student, Abdullahi Tukur Abba, who was reportedly tortured to death by a group of security personnel belonging to a unit code-named ‘Operation Farauta’ in the state.

Legal Attorney Blog on Wednesday reported that the security personnel of Operation Farauta, which comprises personnel of the armed forces, police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), had reportedly tortured Abdullahi to death following an allegation that he received a stolen iPhone 7 belonging to the wife of the Executive Director of Adamawa State Scholarship Board, Shuaibu Wambai Zumo.

A human rights organisation, Amnesty International, demanded an immediate investigation into Abdullahi’s killing. 

According to Amnesty International, the security outfit was set up to fight thuggery, robbery and banditry in the region. Still, the security personnel have been torturing, extorting suspects and investigating civil matters.

On Friday, Governor Fintiri announced on his Twitter handle that he has directed the Commissioner of Police to investigate the student’s killing to ensure justice is done.

He said, “I have directed the Adamawa State Police Commissioner to investigate the alleged murder of Abdallah, supposedly tortured by “Operation Farauta” operatives.

“The investigation seeks to reveal the truth, ensure justice, and safeguard citizens’ rights. The incident originated from a neighbour’s theft accusation.

“I urge for calm and extend condolences to the deceased’s family. Let us cooperate with security agencies as they work tirelessly to keep our state safe.”
