Prosecute those that perpetrated violence in the last election: NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has tasked security agencies to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of all verified cases of political violence, including attacks, intimidation and snatching of ballot boxes and materials in the just concluded elections.

The Executive Secretary NHRC, Chief Tony Ojukwu, at a preliminary news conference in Abuja on the 2023 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, said the Human Rights Situation room received reports of complaints on human rights violations during the election.

The NHRC, however, commended INEC for the early arrival of personnel and materials in many parts of the country.

Chief Ojukwu emphasized the need for the Nigeria Police Force to deploy human rights-based approaches in managing post-election violence cases and ensure the protection of lives and properties.

The Commission called on all relevant authorities to take necessary actions to address the issues raised in the report to ensure that future elections are free, fair, and peaceful.
