Lagos Doctors Arraigned for Involuntary Manslaughter, Granted Bail

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has brought two medical doctors, Michael Atiba and Ugbeye Michael, before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja, over the alleged involuntary manslaughter of patient Ejiro Ugorobi.

Atiba, a doctor at Gbagada General Hospital, and Dr Michael, a consultant at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, face a count charge of involuntary manslaughter, as per LASG’s accusation.

The incident, as disclosed by LASG counsel A. O. Azeez, occurred on October 21, 2023, at No. 20 Michael Adekoya Street, Ilupeju, Lagos State.

The doctors allegedly caused Ugorobi’s death through wrongful medication application before and after surgery, contravening Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Both doctors pleaded not guilty, prompting the prosecutor to request a trial date. The defendants’ lawyers presented bail applications, with Atiba’s counsel emphasizing his client’s role as a lifesaver.

Justice Ogala granted bail to the defendants at N5 million each, with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be residents within the court’s jurisdiction and possess credible financial status. The judge adjourned the trial until May 15, 2024.
