Esteemed Benchers, Learned Silks, Professors, Seniors, Colleagues, and TLCites,

A noteworthy observation pervades the tenure of NBA President Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, marked by a profound commitment to the principles of federal character and the advancement of national integration through the judicious spread of appointments.

In my research, it is discernible that every committee or panel constituted by President Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, adheres, to a considerable extent, to the requisites of national spread as mandated by the Principles of Federal Character and National Integration.

Fundamental Question Arises: Why hasn’t President Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, adopted the prevalent Nigerian trend of populating all NBA Committees solely with individuals from Northern Nigeria, using feeble justifications, as some have been inclined to do?

Strikingly diverging from such parochial practices, President Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, seems to have worked assiduously to ensure that his Transition Committee in 2022 and subsequent committees and panels reflect a balanced representation from all corners of Nigeria.

This approach ensures that no committee exhibits an overwhelming presence of lawyers from a select few states, ethnicities, or religious groups to the detriment of others.

Moreover, to foster national integration, President Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, has consistently steered clear of discriminatory practices based on factors such as place of origin, gender, religion, status, ethnicity, or linguistic affiliation in all his appointments.

This commitment has promoted a sense of belonging and inclusivity among lawyers from diverse segments of Nigeria. It has also mitigated sectional loyalties, emphasizing allegiance to the NBA over divisive affiliations.

I intend to delve further into this subject, substantiating these observations with researched facts. The aim is to encourage future leaders to prioritize inclusivity and to prompt current leaders, who may be lacking in fostering national integration, to reconsider their approach for the collective benefit of the NBA, the legal profession, and the unity of the legal fraternity.

Yours faithfully,
