YC Maikyau OON,SAN, TASK PRESIDENT TINUBU ABOUT THE STATE OF NATIONAL SECURITY AND THE ECONOMY.
In his New Year Message, Mr Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in the nation.
He strongly condemned the December attacks by bandits on Plateau State villages, resulting in nearly 200 fatalities, and the drone strike on Tudun Biri in Kaduna State, claiming over 100 lives.
The NBA President deemed these incidents inexcusable and unacceptable. He highlighted the Tudun Biri incident as indicative of security lapses, emphasizing the need for enhanced inter-agency synergy and coordination. He emphasized the failure of intelligence gathering or deliberate neglect to act on intelligence reports regarding the Plateau attack.
In a call to action, Mr. Maikyau urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government to prioritize the security of Nigerians. He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive approach with significant investments in security to eliminate ungoverned territories and criminal elements.
Shifting his focus to the economy, the NBA President acknowledged President Tinubu’s commitment to adopting fiscal measures promoting domestic production, budgetary reforms, and improvements in electricity generation. However, he stressed the need for tangible actions, emphasizing that Nigerians should witness positive outcomes from the sacrifices made due to subsidy removal.
The NBA President urged the government at all levels to implement people-oriented policies, address inequality, and deploy radical security and economic measures for sustainable development. He emphasized the NBA’s commitment to holding the government accountable as the watchdog of the Nigerian people.
