Judges Overworked: Urgent Call for Adequate Support and Resources: Monday YUbani

Legal expert and former Chairman of the Section of Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Monday Onyekachi Ubani, has raised a poignant concern about the overwhelming workload on judges in the country. In a recent interview, Ubani emphasized the need for comprehensive support to ensure judges effectively carry out their crucial duties.

Highlighting the demanding nature of the judicial sector, Ubani stressed that judges are currently overburdened, especially in handling numerous electoral cases. He underscored the judiciary’s vital role in society and called for immediate attention to address the challenges judges face.

“The judiciary is the only particular sector that plays the role of God in society. They make pronouncements, and pronouncements stand; not even the reverend, not even the imams, have the power of judges,” Ubani remarked.

The Call for Support: Strengthening the Judiciary

He emphasized the importance of addressing foundational issues, such as proper financing, adequate welfare, and optimal working conditions for judges.

Ubani argued that providing judges with the necessary resources and improving infrastructure is essential to succeed in their responsibilities.

“In such responsibility, we must give them all that is requisite for them to succeed, the infrastructure, on the condition under which most of them operate,” he urged.

Ubani shared a poignant incident where a judge revealed the toll of their workload, stating, “I was in court one day, and one of the presiding judges said, ‘Mr. Ubani, two judges are in the mortuary; they are in the mortuary as a result of the pressure of work.'”

Expressing concern for the well-being of judges, Ubani highlighted that the caseload and pressure they face often lead to emotional strain, and some judges have expressed their struggles with the burdens placed upon them.

As the legal expert urged a comprehensive solution to the challenges faced by the judiciary, he called on society to recognize the critical role judges play and work collectively to provide the necessary support and resources to fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
