Islamic Cleric Proposes Compelling Civil Servants to Marry Second Wife

A prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Aminu Baba Waziri, has urged lawmakers to enforce legislation mandating civil servants at Level 12 to enter into polygamous marriages.

In a passionate Friday sermon delivered at the Takur Commercial Mosque in Dutse, Jigawa State, Waziri expressed concern over the surplus of unmarried women in society, urging men to step forward and take them as additional wives.

Bemoaning the trend of reluctance among married men to marry more women, the cleric emphasized the significance of marriage in Islam. He highlighted that both the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) underline its importance and value in the eyes of Allah.

Quoting a verse from the Holy Quran, he referenced Chapter 4:3, where it is written, “You fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or that which your right hands possess. That will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice.”

Encouraging legislative action, the cleric urged passing a law that would mandate civil servants at Level 12, who currently have only one wife, to take another wife before being considered for their next promotion.
