In a shocking incident that has sent waves of panic through the community, gunmen operating under the guise of Biafran agitators have reportedly assassinated Innocent Obi, the Deputy Registrar of the Federal Polytechnic, Uwana, Ebonyi State. The tragic incident occurred in the Ezeala/Ezike autonomous community in Umuezeala, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
Obi, affectionately known as ‘Onye Army’ by the locals, had retired from military service before dedicating his efforts to the Federal Polytechnic. He was also a hopeful candidate for the institution’s substantive registrar position.
According to witnesses, the assailants, numbering over six, breached Obi’s residence late at night, clad in military and police uniforms. The attackers wielded machetes and axes, inflicting fatal wounds on Obi despite the villagers’ attempts to intervene. The assailants then resorted to firing gunshots, forcing the frightened community members to retreat.
Subsequently, the perpetrators abducted Obi, leaving carnage and bloodstains in his home. The villagers organised A search party the following day, eventually leading to the discovery of Obi’s decomposing body between Ehime Mbano and Ahiazu Mbaise.
One of the community members, grieving the loss, shared, “Dee Onye Army was a man who ensured that any youth who wanted to go to school got admission. So many youths were given admission to his school. He never lived like a rich man, always unassuming. It was now that he started building his house in the village, and that building was just within the decking stage before his death.”
The tragic and brutal killing has sparked fear and outrage within the community, with calls for thorough investigations into the motives and identities of the perpetrators. The incident is a grim reminder of the precarious security situation in certain regions, necessitating urgent and effective measures to ensure the safety and protection of innocent citizens.
