Police Patrol Van, Set On Fire.

On Sunday, two yet-to-be-identified policemen attached to the Dragon Patrol Team were feared killed as gunmen shot them at their checkpoint along the Ughelli-Asaba Road by the Oleh roundabout in Delta State.

However, a commercial driver who narrowly escaped death in the incident said he could not confirm if the two policemen died due to the attack but that the police patrol van was set on fire.

He said by the time he and others came out of the bush where they ran into, another police van had been brought to the location to take the victims away.

The state Police Public Relations Officer Command, DSP Bright Edafe, could not comment on the incident when this report was filed.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command said a driver who crushed a policeman to death at a checkpoint along the Benin-Owo Expressway at the Ifon area of the Ose Local Government Area on Sunday had been arrested.

According to the police, the driver was arrested by the men of the Nigerian Army at Sobe in Edo State.

The command, however, denied an earlier report that the cop was killed by suspected kidnappers.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the policeman’s death, declared that it was a hit-and-run case, not kidnapping.

She said, “While policemen were trying to stop the driver of a suspected vehicle, he didn’t stop. So, our men were alerted on the highway, but on getting to a particular place around Ifon, the driver swerved and hit an ASP, and the officer died immediately.

“The driver was, however, pursued, and fortunately for us, he (the driver) was arrested by the military men at Sobe in Edo State.”

A 53 seconds viral video showed the incident scene and the deceased lying on the road in a pool of blood.

He was also seen with a head injury while his colleagues carried his lifeless body into a police van.
