FEC, Set To Address Inconsistencies In Power Supply.

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, has approved a 140 million Naira contract to procure 33 Kva circuit breakers and 120 units of surge arrestors to improve electricity supply.

Minister of State for Power, Mr Jeddy Agba, explained that the approval was part of efforts to address the inconsistencies in the power supply.

He said approval had also been given for a 1.5 billion Naira variation on the contract sum of the construction of the Dukanbo-Shonga 132 KV double circuit transmission line in Kwara State.

The Minister said the aim was to revamp that line, which has been down for several years, adding that with the procurement, total electricity supply will be restored in 2 months to effectively serve the Bacita Farms and all the beneficiaries in the area.

Mr Jeddy Agba said the Ministry had agreed with the NNPC limited to augment companies to supply gas to GENCOs at the current local rate.

Similarly, the Ministry of Transportation obtained FEC’s approval to develop the Snake Island Seaport in Lagos State.

According to the Minister of State for Transportation, Mr Ademola Adegoroye, the port will be expanded through a Public/Private Partnership Arrangement.

“For Snake Island Port, the total investment by the private investors will be $974,185,203.66, and we expect that the investors will get $18 billion throughout 45 years concession period. He explained that the Federal Government would have $5.23 billion, and the ICRC would get $94.9 million”.

The Minister said FEC had equally approved the development of the Burutu Seaport project, in Delta State, through the same agreement.

“For Burutu, the concession period is 40 years. The total projected revenue to the concessionaire, Federal Government and the ICRC, the concessionaire is expected to have an income of $125 billion.

The Federal Government is expected to get a revenue of $9 billion for spending nothing, and the ICRC is expected to rake in an income of $627 million. So the Minister added that the total investment by the investors is $1,285,005,818.40”.

Also approved under a similar agreement is the development of the Ondo Multipurpose Port in Ilaje, stressing that all the projects are at no cost to the Government.

“For Ondo Port, the total investment capital of $1,480,465,253 is to be fully financed by the private investors. The concession period is 50 years, and the expected revenue of $59 billion will go to the private investors, $2.63 billion will go to the Federal Government, and the ICRC will expectedly rake in a sum of $295 million”, he stressed.

Mr Ademola Adegoroye noted that expanding the nation’s maritime space would create more and better employment for the youth and facilitate local and international trade.

FEC also approved the resuscitation of 6000 of the 12000-hectare capacity Middle Ogun Irrigation Scheme in Oyo State to transform its pumping power into renewable energy.

The Minister, Alhaji Sulaiman Adamu, who said the contract was awarded at over 5 billion Naira, said the resuscitation of the Kagara Dam project, abandoned over 40 years ago, had also been approved at 2.3 billion Naira.

The Minister said FEC had approved an augmentation of 61 million Naira for the 2000-hectare Gari Irrigation project, caused by the extension of time on the work.

He said the project had been completed and commissioned, but proper procedure needed to be followed to straighten the records.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration secured the Council’s approval to resume the implementation of the management of on-street parking in the territory, which was hitherto declared illegal by the court.

Briefing newsmen on behalf of the Ministry of the FCT, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said leave had now been granted to the administration to re-establish the status quo.

He also said the. Ministry of Police Affairs got approval to award a 15 billion Naira contract for the renovation of police barracks at Ikeja, Lagos, and the delivery of 83-bedroom flats in it, aimed at improving the morale of the personnel.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the Ministry of Works and Housing got approval to construct federal secretariats in Abia, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kogi, and Taraba States at about 37 billion Naira, to be completed in 23 months.

He said the 2nd Niger Bridge had been completed, saying it would be handed over to the Federal Government on the 20th of this month and commissioned soon after that.

Similarly, the Ministry got approval to increase the over 13 billion Naira original contract sum for rehabilitating the old Enugu-Port Harcourt road to about 10 billion Naira, jacking to over 23 billion Naira.

The Ministry of Aviation equally got approval from FEC to award an over 2 billion Naira contract for the supply and installation of airfield ground lighting on taxiway bravo in Lagos, to be delivered in one year.

The Minister, Alhaji Hadi Sirika, told newsmen that FEC had also approved the purchase of Zaria Hotel, close to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, at over 1.3 billion Naira, to be used for executive courses for students and trainees in the college.

He said FEC had similarly approved a 20-year concession for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and 30 years for the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

“The total amount of money accruing to the Government is 700 million dollars for Abuja and then 97.4 million dollars for Kano. So put together is about 800 million dollars, equal to the money we borrowed to do those 4 airports.

And also to continue the concession in all our airports as against privatisation. So we’ll not be privatising our national assets to continue to remain within the hands of people”, the Minister argued.

Alhaji Hadi Sirika explained that the fees were separate from the direct funds FAAN would continue to earn from passenger service charges, which is expected to be over 4 billion Naira within the concession period.

Also considered by FEC is the Draft National Civil Aviation Policy, geared towards inducing the vibrancy to tackle the dynamic nature of civil aviation.

He also said FEC had approved the change of name of the Federal Ministry of Aviation to the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace of Nigeria. The Minister argued that the Federal was unnecessary since the Ministry was on the Exclusive List.
